ANAHEIM, Calif. — Albert Pujols finally agreed he should wait till next year.
Pujols will miss the rest of the season to rest his injured left foot, the Los Angeles Angels announced.
The $240 million slugger gave up his hope to play again next month when the team’s medical staff and front office advised him to avoid rushing back to the lineup late in the Angels’ dismal season. Pujols partially tore his left plantar fascia last month, and only recently got his foot out of a walking boot.
Pistorius indicted
on murder charges
PRETORIA, South Africa — Olympian Oscar Pistorius was indicted on charges of murder and illegal possession of ammunition for the shooting death of his girlfriend on Valentine’s Day.
A Pretoria court set March 3 as the trial date for the double-amputee, who says he shot Reeva Steenkamp by mistake, believing she was an intruder in his home. Prosecutors say he killed her after an argument. The prosecution submitted a list of more than 100 witnesses.
Pistorius was in court for the indictment, and was seen crying and holding hands with his siblings before proceedings started. He faces a life sentence with a minimum of 25 years in prison if convicted of premeditated murder.

NEW YORK — Roger Federer is seeded No. 7 for the U.S. Open, his first slot outside the top three at any Grand Slam tournament in a decade.
Federer’s ranking dropped two slots to seventh, and the U.S. Tennis Association’s seedings followed the ATP standings.
Federer’s record 17 Grand Slam titles include five at the U.S. Open. He’s among five former champions in the men’s field, including No. 1-seeded Novak Djokovic, No. 2 Rafael Nadal, and No. 3 Andy Murray, who won the 2012 title. Federer was seeded No. 1 at 18 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments from 2004-08.
Martin to fill in
for Stewart
Out for the season with a broken leg, Tony Stewart turned to one of NASCAR’s most respected drivers to take over the No. 14.
At 54, Mark Martin is up for the challenge of taking the wheel for his good friend.
Martin was released from his part-time schedule at Michael Waltrip Racing on Monday and will drive the No. 14 Chevrolet in 12 of the final 13 Sprint Cup races for Stewart-Haas Racing. Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, will miss the rest of the season while he recovers from the broken right leg suffered in a sprint car crash Aug. 5 at Southern Iowa Speedway.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Von Miller lined up at his usual position and flashed the freakish athletic moves that might soon be missing from the Denver Broncos’ ramshackle defense.
The All-Pro linebacker brushed past reporters after another stellar practice, choosing not to stop and talk about the latest report that he could be facing an even longer suspension that originally thought. ESPN reported that Miller might have to sit out at least six games for violating the league’s drug abuse policy.
